With a 1-0 win over Algeria on Tuesday, Ghana’s U-23 squad, the Black Meteors, clinched their berth in the 2023 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations competition in Morocco.
Abdul Fatawu Issahaku was the Black Meteors’ hero, scoring the game-winning goal after only 12 minutes to give the club a much-needed boost. The team continued to create chances and dominate the game, with Algeria never looking at ease in front of the large crowd at Kumasi’s Baba Yara Stadium.
The triumph occurred in the second leg of their qualification, giving them a 2-1 aggregate win and a ticket to the Olympic Games.
The victory keeps the Black Meteors’ ambition of qualifying for the Olympic Games alive, something they haven’t done since 2004. To qualify, the team must finish in the top three at the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations tournament, making their chances much more difficult.
Considering the challenge ahead, coach Ibrahim Tanko and his team are motivated to battle hard and achieve history for Ghana.
