Despite the team’s inability to move from the group stage at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Black Stars manager Ameenu Shardow believes Ghana would have made considerable progress if Otto Addo had remained as coach.
Ghana qualified for the prestigious tournament under Addo’s leadership, overcoming arch rival Nigeria in the last qualifying round. However, their World Cup campaign saw them win only 3-2 against South Korea, while losing to Portugal and Uruguay, resulting in an early elimination.
Addo resigned from his job following Ghana’s last group game, a 2-0 loss to Uruguay. Following that, the Ghana Football Association named Chris Hughton, who had previously worked as Addo’s technical advisor, as the next coach of the national team.
“The various manager changes in such a short period of time have clearly not helped us.” It is unhealthy to drop and change here and there. We need some consistency and continuity, but when the results aren’t pouring in, you’re more or less tempted to pull the plug and restart,” Ameenu remarked on 3FM’s Sports Ultras show.
“It’s about getting the right person in there, but you can’t know who that person is until they get in there and start working.”
“I have always said I believe that we would have been better off with Otto Addo continuing because he made mistakes at the World Cup,” Shardow remarked of Addo’s potential. He’s never achieved that level before. He is the type of person who learns from failure. And I believe we would have been in a better position to make the proper judgments now, but that is no longer the case.
“Fortunately, we have someone who was also a part of the team in a position to make certain decisions.” Perhaps he has the benefit of hindsight because he witnessed whatever occurred, and I feel he is making the correct decisions today.”
